In a significant stride towards addressing the energy deficit in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has commissioned the first phase of the 11 MW Oyo State Independent Power Project (IPP).

This landmark project, spearheaded by Elektron Energy, marks a pivotal moment in the state’s efforts to enhance electricity supply and attract private investment in the energy sector.

Oyo State currently receives an average of 80 MW from the national grid. Upon the completion of the IPP, the state’s electricity supply will increase by 14%, providing much-needed relief to residents and businesses.

Governor Makinde highlighted the challenges overcome during the project’s execution, including securing clearance from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which took a full year following the groundbreaking ceremony in December 2021. However, the recent constitutional amendment empowering states to generate, distribute, and transmit electricity promises greater autonomy for similar initiatives.

Supervised by the Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, the IPP reflects the administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for investment. “We are inviting more investors in the energy sector to Oyo State. There is a ready market for them,” Governor Makinde stated during the commissioning.

This development underscores Oyo State’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions, economic growth, and improved quality of life for its citizens.
