The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday took the second reading of the Oyo State University of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora Bill, 2026, marking another significant step towards the formal establishment of the institution as a university.

The plenary session was presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi, in the absence of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Edward Ogundoyin, who was away on an official engagement.n

The Bill, which seeks to provide the necessary legislative framework for the transformation and establishment of the Oyo State University of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, was jointly sponsored by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Edward Ogundoyin, and the member representing Ibarapa Central/North State Constituency, Hon. Peter Ojedokun.

The proposed university is expected to deepen access to quality tertiary education while strengthening agricultural education, research, technological innovation and human capital development, particularly in Ibarapa and other parts of the state.

Following its consideration at second reading, the Bill was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Education (Tertiary Institutions, Science and Technology) for detailed scrutiny and to prepare its report ahead of its third reading and final passage.

The referral to the relevant committee is in line with the legislative procedure of the House, allowing the committee to examine the provisions of the Bill, engage relevant stakeholders where necessary and make appropriate recommendations to the House before the legislation returns to plenary.h
