…Kwara Federal Lawmaker, Basic Education Committee Deputy Chairman to Share Legislative Experience with University of Ibadan Students
Anticipation is building ahead of the Odidiomo Students’ Legislative Summit, with exactly seven days to go before the highly anticipated student-centred legislative engagement at the University of Ibadan.
One of the distinguished figures billed to headline the summit as Guest Speaker is Rt. Hon. Muktar Tolani Shagaya, a member of the 10th House of Representatives and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services.
Shagaya represents the Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency of Kwara State in the National Assembly, where he has distinguished himself through legislative interventions, motions, and sponsorship of bills addressing critical issues in education, healthcare, constitutional development, and public policy.
His participation is expected to add significant depth to the summit, particularly as the event seeks to expose students to the workings of legislative institutions, democratic leadership, representation and the responsibilities of elected public officials.
As Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Shagaya occupies a strategic position in the National Assembly, particularly in matters relating to Nigeria’s basic education sector. His legislative experience is therefore expected to provide students with valuable insight into the relationship between lawmaking, education policy and national development.
Among the legislative initiatives associated with Shagaya are proposals seeking the establishment of Federal Medical Centres and cancer research and treatment facilities, as well as interventions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s basic education system.
He has also sponsored legislative measures seeking reforms to the Universal Basic Education framework, including proposals to expand access to free, compulsory and universal basic education and increase funding for the Universal Basic Education Fund.
Beyond his legislative responsibilities, Shagaya’s academic background has also shaped his engagement with public affairs. He studied International Relations at the University of Plymouth, United Kingdom, and later obtained a master’s degree in International Development and Development Management from the University of Manchester.
Born on December 16, 1989, in Ilorin, Kwara State, Shagaya has emerged as one of the younger voices in Nigeria’s current legislative landscape, bringing his academic and professional experiences into parliamentary representation.
His appearance at the Odidiomo Students’ Legislative Summit is consequently expected to provide an important opportunity for students to engage directly with a serving federal lawmaker and gain practical perspectives on legislative leadership, constituency representation, policymaking and youth participation in democratic governance.
The summit, convened in honour of Hon. Dhikirullah Olalekan Odidiomo, is expected to bring together students, student leaders, academics, political stakeholders and other members of the university community for an engaging conversation around legislative leadership and the role of young people in Nigeria’s democratic development.
With seven days remaining, expectations are mounting among students and stakeholders who anticipate an intellectually stimulating session featuring firsthand perspectives from one of the country’s serving federal legislators.
