An electrical surge from an unattended appliance has been identified as the cause of a fire outbreak that gutted a three-bedroom flat in Akobo area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Heritage Echo gathered that the incident occurred at No. 3, Adeoya Layout, Unity Crescent, Akobo, Ibadan, on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

The operation was led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Oyeniyi Taofiq promptly responded to the scene and discovered that the upper floor of a four-flat residential building had been engulfed by flames.

The fire crew immediately commenced firefighting operations, preventing the inferno from spreading to adjoining buildings and properties.

The agency confirmed that no casualty was recorded in the incident, attributing the outbreak to an electrical surge caused by an appliance left plugged in unattended.

The officer in charge of the operation also delivered a fire safety sensitisation lecture to residents and sympathisers at the scene.

Residents applauded the Professionalism of the Fire Service and lauded the Governor for providing state-of-the-art equipment to the State Fire Service in responding to emergencies.

Equally, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to remain vigilant and observe necessary fire safety measures at all times.

He urged members of the public to promptly report fire incidents and provide accurate locations to enable firefighters to respond swiftly and minimise damage.
