COYYM Warns Oyo Youths Against Political Deception, Urges Scrutiny of Leaders’ Records and Promises

The Leadership of the Coalition of Yoruba Youth Movement (COYYM) has called on youths and citizens across Oyo State to remain politically conscious, vigilant and discerning in their engagement with political actors, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of future electoral contests.

In a statement issued by Comrade Olalere Benedict Adetunji, President of COYYM, the Movement expressed concern over what it considers the growing tendency among some political actors to turn public issues into political battles, sometimes at the expense of constructive engagement, policy discussions and the overall interest of the people.

According to the Movement, the people of Oyo State must be cautious of politicians who present themselves as champions of public interest while their actions, political records and policy proposals may not necessarily support the promises they make.

“Not everyone who comes in sheep’s clothing has the interest of the people at heart.

Political promises must be examined against the records, character, consistency and previous opportunities of those making them.”

THE POLITICS OF DISPARAGEMENT MUST NOT REPLACE ISSUE-BASED DEBATE

COYYM observed that political competition is an essential feature of democracy; however, it becomes counterproductive when public discourse is reduced to personal attacks, unsubstantiated allegations and attempts to discredit another administration without presenting credible alternatives.

The Movement maintained that Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde’s administration should be assessed on the basis of its record, policies, achievements, shortcomings and measurable impact on the people of Oyo State. Equally, those seeking to challenge or succeed the present administration should be prepared to present their own records, policy priorities and practical solutions to the challenges confronting the state.
For COYYM, the question is not whether political leaders should be criticised. In a democracy, every public officeholder must remain accountable. The fundamental question is whether such criticism is supported by evidence, constructive arguments and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of citizens.

It is therefore important that political disagreements do not become instruments for misleading the public or diverting attention from substantive issues such as employment, education, healthcare, infrastructure, security, economic opportunities and youth development.

YESTERDAY’S RECORD MUST INFORM TOMORROW’S EXPECTATIONS

The Movement further stressed that political history matters. Citizens should not evaluate aspiring leaders solely by their present rhetoric, public appearances or sudden declarations of concern for the people. Their previous conduct, decisions, achievements and use of public office should also inform public assessment.

As the popular saying goes, “If there were no yesterday, there would be no today.”
This principle underscores the importance of consistency and accountability in leadership. Those who have previously occupied positions of public responsibility should be prepared to explain what they achieved, the challenges they encountered, the resources available to them and the lessons they learned.

Similarly, political aspirants should demonstrate that their ambitions are supported by credible plans rather than the mere desire to occupy public office.
COYYM believes that the future of Oyo State must not be determined by political theatrics or emotional manipulation. It should be shaped by informed citizens who understand that governance requires preparation, integrity, competence, accountability and a clear understanding of the needs of the people.

A CALL TO THE YOUTHS OF OYO STATE

Comrade Olalere Benedict Adetunji, President of COYYM, called on youths throughout Oyo State to remain alert, politically educated and committed to peaceful democratic participation.

He urged young people not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of political hostility, misinformation or personality-driven campaigns. Rather, they should demand verifiable evidence, scrutinise political promises, compare policy proposals and hold every public officeholder and aspiring leader accountable to the same standards.

The Movement emphasised that supporting a political leader should never mean abandoning independent thought. Equally, opposing an administration should not mean accepting every allegation made against it without scrutiny.

Oyo State belongs to all its citizens, and its political future must be determined by informed public judgment rather than deception, propaganda or manufactured outrage.

COYYM also urged political actors to conduct their engagements with restraint, respect democratic institutions and prioritise the welfare of citizens above personal ambition. Healthy political competition should produce better ideas, stronger accountability and improved public services, not unnecessary division among the people.

OUR POSITION: THE PEOPLE MUST COME FIRST

The Coalition of Yoruba Youth Movement reiterates that political leadership is a responsibility, not merely an opportunity for personal advancement. Every administration must be accountable for its performance, while every aspiring leader must be prepared to demonstrate the substance behind their promises.

The Movement will continue to encourage political awareness, youth participation, peaceful coexistence and issue-based public discourse across Oyo State.
Our message is clear: Do not judge political leaders by their appearance, slogans or sudden expressions of concern for the people alone. Examine their records, question their promises, verify their claims and demand practical solutions.
The youths of Oyo State must shine their eyes, think critically and refuse to surrender their political judgment to anyone.
The future belongs to a generation that is informed enough to recognise political deception, courageous enough to demand accountability and responsible enough to place the collective interest of the people above partisan sentiment.
