Political Tension and Insecurity in Oyo State: Coincidence or Calculated Threat?|By Idowu Oyeleke Esq

The recent attack on a secondary school in Oyo State by unidentified gunmen on 15th May 2026, which reportedly led to the abduction of the school principal and an unconfirmed number of students, has intensified public anxiety over insecurity and political tension in Nigeria.

What has further fueled widespread suspicion is the timing of the incident, occurring less than 24 hours after Governor Seyi Makinde publicly declared his intention to contest for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Although no official evidence has directly linked the attack to political actors, many Nigerians believe the circumstances raise serious questions that cannot be ignored.

Across social and political circles, there are growing concerns that the attack may have been politically motivated, particularly against the backdrop of increasing political rivalry, insecurity, and allegations of intimidation within the nation’s democratic space. These concerns underscore the urgent need for a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation capable of restoring public confidence and uncovering the true perpetrators and motives behind the incident.

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a constitutional responsibility to ensure the protection of lives, uphold democratic freedoms, and guarantee that political competition is not overshadowed by fear, violence, or coercion. Silence, delay, or lack of accountability in moments such as this only deepens public distrust and national tension.

The international community, democratic institutions, and civil society organisations across the world are therefore urged to closely monitor developments in Nigeria and encourage adherence to democratic principles, human rights, justice, and the rule of law. Nigeria must not be allowed to slide into deeper political instability or civil unrest at a time when citizens are demanding peace, security, and credible leadership.
