…As Invalidation of party convention forces trustees to assume leadership, plans underway for interim committee

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assumed control of the party’s national leadership following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria that invalidated key structures within the party.

In a press statement issued and signed by BoT Chairman, Sen. Adolphus Wabara on Thursday, the BoT said its decision was in line with the party’s constitution to prevent a leadership vacuum after the court nullified the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025.

The court ruling voided the convention that produced the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. It also upheld the suspension of key party officials, including Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade.

According to the BoT, the judgment effectively nullifies all actions taken by the affected officials, including the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, as well as the formation of a caretaker committee and the March 2026 convention held in Abuja.

The BoT stated that the invalidation of both factions of the party’s leadership has placed the responsibility of steering the PDP on the board, citing provisions of the party’s constitution.

As part of immediate steps, the BoT announced plans to convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to appoint an interim National Working Committee that will manage the party’s affairs and prepare for the 2027 general elections.

Party staff have also been directed to resume duties at the national secretariat under the BoT’s supervision pending the appointment of the interim leadership.

The BoT commended party stakeholders, including state governors such as Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, for their resilience during the crisis.

Calling for unity, the board urged members to set aside differences and work toward reconciliation, warning that continued internal conflict could undermine the party and its support base across Nigeria.
