Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State and 2027 gubernatorial aspirant, Barr. Akeem Agbaje, has joined voices to mark International Women’s Equality Day, calling for greater participation of women in leadership and governance across all levels.

In a statement marking the day, the illustrious son of Ibadan underscored the need to move beyond mere recognition of women’s contributions, stressing that equitable representation in decision-making tables is fundamental for inclusive and responsive governance.

“This day reminds us that equality is more than a slogan, it is the foundation of effective leadership. Women must be given real opportunities in politics and governance, not as tokens, but as partners in building our future.”

His remarks echo calls from national and civil society groups such as the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) who have urged for women’s inclusion in political offices and the urgent passage of reserved seats for women in government bodies.

The philanthropist also referenced the progress made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has increased female representation in key leadership positions and called a more gender-balanced leadership essential to strengthening democracy.

Pointing to the persistent gap in women’s representation both in elected and appointed offices, the legal luminary called for deliberate policy actions to dismantle systemic barriers, including legislative measures, conscious gender-focused appointments, and support for women candidates within political parties.

He added that empowering women in governance is not charity, but a strategic necessity. “A diversified and balanced leadership fosters trust, fairness, and better policy outcomes,” aligning with broader national demands for greater inclusion and equity.

The 2027 Oyo State gubernatorial aspirant reaffirmed that his commitment to gender equity goes beyond symbolic recognition, stressing that his vision for Oyo State and Nigeria is one where women are fully integrated into governance, shaping policies and decisions that affect their lives and communities.
