A Day of Double Joy: Amofin Beulah Adeoye Celebrates Life and Heritage on Isese Day

This morning, August 20th began for me with the quiet joy of personal blessings—prayers and gifts at our family altar to mark my birthday. At the same time, a wider, more ancient rhythm is beating across Oyo State as we celebrate our annual Isese Day. It is a sacred moment for reflection, gratitude, and a proud reaffirmation of who we are. On this day, the wisdom of our ancestors feels close, and the timeless values of “Esin Adayeba” remind us of our origins.

To all the custodians of our tradition and adherents of the Isese faith, I extend my most heartfelt congratulations. This celebration is more than a festival; it is a living testament to our resilience and cultural pride. For generations, Isese has been a spiritual compass, preserving the harmony and balance that sustains the Yoruba people.

It feels like a beautiful stroke of providence that my birthday coincides with this year’s celebration. This personal alignment deepens my connection to the moment. A birthday invites us to reflect on where we have been and where we are going; Isese Day calls us to honor the ancestral journey that made our lives possible. Together, these two occasions feel like a powerful meditation on life, reminding me that our personal stories and our collective heritage are threads woven into the same eternal fabric.

As we celebrate today, we reflect on the essence of Esin Adayeba—the “religion of that which was found at the beginning.” It is a philosophy that speaks to authenticity and the divine rhythm of the universe. To remember these truths is to stand taller, confident that we belong to a story much greater than ourselves. Our celebration would be incomplete without acknowledging the protective presence of ‘gbogbo alaale merinlac, the revered spiritual guardians of Oyo State. Their powerful embrace ensures that our home continues to thrive as a beacon of tradition and faith.

While Isese Day is central to its practitioners, its message is truly universal. In a world often fractured by misunderstanding, it teaches us the importance of our roots. To know your origin is to walk with clarity. To honor your ancestors is to inherit their wisdom. This is why today’s celebration resonates beyond one faith; it is for every son and daughter of Oyo, for every African who carries the drumbeat of history in their soul, and for all of humanity—because in honoring one culture, we affirm that diversity enriches us all.

On this joyous occasion, let us unite in gratitude. Let’s pause to honor the ancestors whose sacrifices built the paths we now walk and commit ourselves to passing these values to the next generation. As the rituals, prayers, and music fill the air, I extend my warmest wishes once again. May this Isese Day bring peace and abundance to all, and may the spirit of our heritage guide us toward lives of harmony and purpose.

For me, it is a day of double joy: a birthday and an Isese Day intertwined, a beautiful reminder that life itself is the greatest gift, enriched by the culture that defines us.

Happy Isese Day, Oyo State. May your spirit remain unshaken and your heritage everlasting.
