The Oyo State Government has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental violations, warning that offenders will face stiff penalties, including hefty fines and possible jail terms.
Speaking through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the government urged residents to dispose of waste only through accredited waste managers and to strictly follow designated collection schedules. The statement stressed that dumping refuse on roads, medians, drainages, and water bodies is not only unlawful but also a major driver of flooding, pollution, and preventable diseases.
Punishment for Offenders
Those caught engaging in illegal waste dumping or other environmental breaches will be prosecuted under the state’s environmental laws, with fines running into tens of thousands of naira, alongside the possibility of custodial sentences for repeat offenders. Mobile environmental courts will fast-track such cases to ensure swift justice.
A Call to Responsibility
The government appealed to residents to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility, noting that clean surroundings contribute to improved public health, enhanced aesthetics, and stronger climate resilience.
Embracing ‘Waste to Wealth’
Beyond enforcement, the Oyo State Government is encouraging households, schools, and businesses to embrace recycling and resource recovery turning plastics, paper, metals, and organic waste into valuable products. By partnering with recycling companies and community-based initiatives, residents can earn income while reducing landfill pressure.
Residents are therefore urged to work hand-in-hand with waste managers, obey environmental laws, and adopt responsible waste habits for a cleaner, healthier, and wealthier Oyo State.
