Oyo State’s Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) is a game-changer for Nigeria’s economic diversification journey as Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration made significant strides in agricultural development, with the SAPZ program being a key initiative, it marks a significant step towards transforming the state’s agricultural sector and boosting economic growth.

The SAPZ program, supported by the AfDB, Islamic Development Bank, and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), aims to industrialize agriculture and reduce dependency on imported finished agricultural goods. With this initiative, Oyo State is poised to become a hub for agribusiness, creating jobs and stimulating economic activity.

These are key features of the SAPZ program

Agro-Industrial Hubs: The program involves the development of agro-industrial hubs, such as the Fasola Agribusiness Hub, to serve as centers for agricultural processing and industrialization.

Economic Growth: The SAPZAB aims to stimulate economic growth, enhance food security, and improve rural livelihoods.

Investment in Infrastructure: The program includes investment in infrastructure, such as access roads and logistics, to support agro-industrial development.

Partnerships: The program promotes partnerships between the state, private sector, and development organizations to drive agricultural transformation.

Under Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership, Oyo State has made significant strides in agricultural development. The state has :

  • Expand OYSADA: The Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency to support agribusiness partnership between the state, private sector, and development organizations.
  • Upgraded Fasola Farms: Transformed Fasola Farms into a thriving industrial hub, now designated as Nigeria’s first SAPZ.
  • Developed Road Infrastructure: Improved road infrastructure to connect all zones of the state, enhancing access to markets and facilitating economic growth.
  • Supported Smallholder Farmers: Implemented policies and programs to support smallholder farmers, promoting agricultural productivity and food security.

The SAPZ program, supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), aims to industrialize agriculture and reduce dependency on imported finished agricultural goods.

The Fasola Agribusiness Hub has been designated as Nigeria’s first Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone by the AfDB. This hub will serve as a center for agricultural processing and industrialization.

The program involves investing in infrastructure, such as access roads and logistics, to support agro-industrial development. It aims to stimulate economic growth, enhance food security, and improve rural livelihoods.

Some notable achievements include the development of the Eruwa Agribusiness Industrial Hub, a 3,000-hectare project combining crop processing, livestock ranching, warehousing, residential estates, agro-tourism, healthcare, and equipment leasing.

The SAPZ program is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic activity in rural communities. It aims to increase agricultural productivity and improve food security.
