As the world looks ahead to COP30, Oyo’s presence at the Bonn meeting underscores the importance of involving states in international climate policy development.

In a historic move, Oyo State participated in the recent United Nations climate meetings held in Bonn, Germany, marking the first time Nigerian subnational entities were given a direct platform at the global climate negotiation table.

Speaking on the significance of state-level participation, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Barr. Nurudeen Temilolu Seun Ashamu, highlighted that Oyo’s contributions emphasized the importance of aligning local action with global climate goals.

“One of the strongest messages we brought to the table is the urgent need for consistent and equitable climate financing,” he stated. “Without adequate support, the local interventions that directly affect communities cannot be scaled or sustained.”

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to His Excellency Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering support in positioning Oyo State for global engagement, and to the National Council on Climate Change for facilitating the State’s participation.

With this milestone, Oyo State strengthens its role as a progressive subnational actor in the climate space amplifying local experiences on the international stage for greater impact.
