The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, passed for second reading a bill seeking the alteration of Ibadan Central local government area to reflect the proper name, ‘Ibadan North-East Local Government Area’.
This followed presentation of the lead debate at the plenary by the sponsor, who is the representing Ibadan North East/South East Federal constituency, Rep. Abass Adigun, popularly known as Agboworin.
Leading the debate during the plenary, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Rep. Agboworin explained that the Bill proposes to amend the Part 1 of the First Schedule to the 1999 Constitution in Paragraph 30, line 2, which reads ‘Ibadan Central Local Government Area’ instead of Ibadan North-East Local Government Area’, which is one of the 33 Local Government Areas in Oyo State.

Agboworin, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs, noted that the anomaly has lingered since the enactment of the 1999 Constitution.

He maintained that no bold attempt has been taken to effect necessary correction by previous representatives from the Constituency.
“It is pertinent to state that this anomaly has been there since the enactment of the 1999 Constitution and no attempt has been made to correct it by previous Representatives from that axis,” the lawmaker noted.
