Hon. Adebayo Babajide Gabriel, Chairman of the House Committee on Transport in the Oyo State House of Assembly, has called for greater synergy among stakeholders in the transport sector to align with international best practices.
Speaking at a one-day workshop on transport management held at Marchfort Court Yard Hotel and Suites, Agodi, Ibadan, Hon. Babajide emphasized the necessity of collaboration to advance the sector. He assured that the committee would take necessary actions to address the issues discussed.
The workshop, themed “Transport Management in Oyo State in Conformity with International Best Practices,” aimed to bring together stakeholders to identify challenges and develop strategies for a sustainable transport system. Hon. Babajide highlighted the constitutional responsibility of the House of Assembly to make laws and oversee government activities, facilitating better cooperation among the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary. The workshop was organized to gather inputs from key stakeholders to enhance the sector’s development.
Dr. Adetunji Adeyemi, a resource person at the workshop, underscored the importance of an efficient transportation system for economic development. He noted that a reliable transport system is crucial for operations and production activities, influencing the economy positively. Dr. Adeyemi pointed out that road transport impacts accessibility, connectivity, economic growth, employment, tourism, social integration, emergency response, infrastructure development, and internally generated revenue.
In his remarks, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, praised the workshop for its insightful revelations, which he believes will help propel the state forward. Hon. Akintunde Olajide Emmanuel (AKT) also expressed gratitude to the stakeholders and team, promising that the program would foster new developments in the state’s transport system.
Engr. Babatunde Folasayo from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, South West, stressed the need for a database and proper registration to improve the sector. He emphasized that establishing bus terminals and a data system would enhance the security architecture and guide the activities of motorists and transport sector members.
Representatives from Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), VIO, Ministry of Works and Transport, Park Managers, and other relevant bodies attended the workshop, along with lawmakers including Hon. Olasunkanmi Babalola, Hon. Razak Mabaje, Hon. Owolabi Olusola, and Hon. Kehinde Taofeek Olatunde.
