Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu has charged Teachers under State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), to embark on self development and embrace the use of technology to be in tandem with the emerging trend in the global practice.
The commissioner, who gave the charge while declaring open, a 5-day training on ‘Newly Innovated Nigeria Raggio Emilia for Pre-Primary Teachers’, at UMC Primary School, Molete, Ibadan, said there is need for them to add valve to whatever they are doing as teachers.
He explained that teachers need to continue learning new things and be more innovative to give their pupils updated knowledge.
Harping on the importance of Information Communication Technology, the number one teacher in the state, urged teachers to deploy basic digital tools in teaching for effective service delivery.
He said: “I put it to you that before you can claim to be a good teacher, you need to always seek knowledge and be ready to learn new things always.
“You are privileged today to be classroom teachers, headmistress, resource individuals. The truth is that we are all learners because as human beings, we are to learn from cradle until death.
‘We should keep learning every day. The moment you don’t learn any new things, you won’t be productive.
“This training is not for fun, as you are opportune to have this, you are expected to make use of it in the classroom.
“We must learn how to do things in different ways.
As teachers, we should be able to use Open Education Resources (OER), in our classrooms.
“By now, as teachers in this century, we should migrate from looking for Textbooks before writing lesson notes, but to searching for materials on the internet. We must not be using the method we were familiar with ten, fifteen years ago.
“Today, teaching has been made simpler and easier through the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT). Teachers should engage in lifelong learning to remain relevant to learners’ aspirations in a fast changing global environment for personal growth and secure the integrity of the teaching profession.
“I am so happy that UBEC people are with us here. If there are innovative things they are doing in Oyo,they can borrow it from us and other states will key into it. You are lucky to have a good resource person, that comes from a specialist University of education.
“To all participants, I want you to evaluate yourselves after this training. I wish you fruitful deliberation as I declare this training open.
The training was attended by the Permanent Secretary , Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr.Olusanjo Adeniyi, Acting Executive Secretary, Oyo SUBEB, Mrs. Olaide Ladipo , Director, Primary Education Services, Mr.Ayodele Alabi and a host of others.
