Member of the House of Representatives representing Ibadan North-East/South-East Federal Constituency, Oyo State, Rep. Abass Adigun (Agboworin), on Monday, presented Nigeria’s draft National Drug Control Master Plan for 2026–2030, at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.

Agboworin, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs, led a delegation and represented the Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) CON, OFR, at the event, saying that it was aimed at strengthening drug prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation and institutional coordination.

In his presentation, he highlighted Nigeria’s institutional reforms in combating illicit drugs under the theme, ‘Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: Nigeria’s Case Study In Institutional Transformation In Drug Control’.

The lawmaker explained that the presentation showcased the achievements of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which recorded 29,262 arrests, seized over 5.3 million kilogrammes of illicit drugs valued at more than ₦1.5 trillion, and secured 5,225 convictions between January 2025 and June 2026.

The agency also reportedly provided counselling, treatment and rehabilitation to over 13,500 people.

Agboworin highlighted initiatives including the NDLEA’s digital services and an Alternative Development programme in Ondo State, designed to encourage communities to replace illicit cannabis cultivation with legitimate agriculture.

He stressed that sustainable progress requires effective institutions, accountability and international partnerships that translate commitments into tangible benefits for citizens and communities.

The presentation called for stronger international cooperation, intelligence-sharing, action against illicit financial flows, improved rehabilitation services and sustainable livelihood opportunities for vulnerable communities.

It further emphasised the need to combine law enforcement with public health interventions, technology and community development.

Agboworin’s participation provided Nigeria with an opportunity to showcase its drug control strategy on the global stage.

The delegation was joined by top officials of the Agency including the NDLEA Secretary, Barr. Shadrach Haruna, a staff of the Nigeria United Nations Ambassador, Mrs Bola Asaju.
