The legacy of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abubakar Siyanbola Ladigbolu, was brought to the fore once again as his grandson, Prince Afeez Kolade Siyanbola Ladigbolu, led a solemn remembrance 81 years after the monarch’s demise, celebrating a reign that continues to shape the history of the ancient Oyo Empire.

It would be recalled that the late monarch died on December 19th 1944 culminating 81years today 19th December, 2025.

The remembrance, marked by reflections on leadership, tradition, and service to the people, highlighted the enduring influence of Oba Ladigbolu, whose stewardship on the throne was characterized by wisdom, cultural preservation, and a commitment to the unity of Oyo land. The event served not only as a tribute to a royal ancestor but also as a reaffirmation of the values he embodied.

Speaking during the commemoration, the grandson, Prince Kolade Siyanbola Ladigbolu described the late monarch as a symbol of dignity and principled leadership, noting that his contributions to the stability and growth of the kingdom continue to resonate generations after his demise.

He emphasised the importance of sustaining the cultural heritage and moral standards bequeathed by the revered king.

While reacting to the late Oyo monarch, “it’s precisely 81 years ago today, the code of death touched the Imperial Majesty, Oba Abubakar Akanbi Adedokun Siyanbola Ladigbolu, the Alaafin of Oyo, who ruled between 1911 and 1944.

“The entire Western part of Africa felt what exactly the Royalty was supposed to be with your existence. Your contributions towards the amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorate and Lagos Colony, now the Federal Republic of Nigeria remain unforgettable.

“Alaafin Siyanbola Omo Olukuewu, Ladigbolu Kini, Obanla tii fi Oba je, Oba Alagbala, Oko Dudu, Oko Pupa, Oko Borokini Baba Salami, Olowo Ladugbo, Baba Gbadegesin”.

“Dear, Late Kabiyesi, Your reign commanded respect from every corner of the world. The British Council testified to your supremacy, no one dares to check your order. Your words were so heavy, that Yorubaland at large can never forget your tenure as Alaafin.

However, the occasion also drew attention to the role of traditional institutions in fostering peace, identity, and continuity within Yoruba society. Observers noted that such remembrances help bridge the past and present, reinforcing respect for history while inspiring contemporary leadership.

As Oyo people and admirers reflect on the life and times of Oba Abubakar Siyanbola Ladigbolu, the 81st remembrance stands as a testament to a monarch whose legacy transcends time, reaffirming his place among the most respected custodians of Oyo’s royal heritage.
