The emerging contest in Oyo Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 elections in Oyo State is raising questions not only about political alignments, but also about who is setting the pace with fresh ideas and grassroots interventions.
It would be recalled that the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate, Hon. Temilolu Nurudeen Ashamu, popularly known as Seun Ashamu, launched TNA’s ₦1.5m motorcycle intervention; APC candidate Akeem Adeyemi Skimeh’s similar initiative sparks debate over originality in Oyo politics
On Saturday, September 19, 2026, Barrister Temilolu Nurudeen Ashamu (TNA) engaged commercial motorcycle operators in Oyo town in a direct intervention targeted at members of the transport community.
During the engagement, Ashamu donated three Bajaj motorcycles and ₦1.5 million to representatives of three transport groups, while also announcing a petrol-support initiative scheduled to commence the following week.
The intervention was publicly reported the following day, putting the initiative firmly in the public domain.
Barely days later, a similar initiative associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Prince Akeem Adeniyi Adeyemi, popularly known as Skimeh, has generated political commentary over the striking timing and similarity of the approaches.
Adeyemi, a prominent Oyo politician and three-term member of the House of Representatives for the Afijio, Atiba, Oyo East and Oyo West Federal Constituency, is seeking another term on the APC platform.
For supporters of Ashamu, the sequence of events raises a simple political question: If an idea was already introduced and publicly executed by one candidate, what explains the sudden emergence of a similar intervention from another political camp just days later?
The argument being advanced by Ashamu’s camp is not necessarily that political actors cannot adopt similar ideas. Rather, it is that leadership should be driven by the capacity to identify challenges early, develop original solutions, and set the agenda rather than wait for another candidate to act before responding.
There is, indeed, nothing inherently wrong with learning from an initiative that addresses a genuine public need. In a democratic contest, ideas can be replicated, improved upon or expanded, particularly where the ultimate beneficiaries are citizens.
However, the timing has nevertheless provided political observers and supporters with room to debate whether the development represents healthy competition, policy imitation or simply coincidental convergence around the needs of commercial motorcycle operators.
For Ashamu’s supporters, the political interpretation is already clear: their candidate acted first, engaged the affected community directly and announced a further support programme before the similar initiative associated with Skimeh surfaced.
The broader issue, therefore, goes beyond motorcycles, money or petrol support.
It is about who is generating the ideas, who is responding to them and who is capable of setting the political agenda at the grassroots.
As the 2027 campaign gathers momentum, Oyo voters are likely to encounter more initiatives, promises and empowerment programmes from competing political camps. The significance of the current development may ultimately lie not in who replicated what, but in whether such interventions produce sustainable benefits for the people they are designed to serve.
For now, however, one question is already making the rounds among political watchers:
When the “aburo” speaks first and the “elder” follows days later, is it inspiration, competition or simply a shortage of fresh ideas?
