The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Oyo State, has installed the member representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Abass Adigun Agboworin, as its Grand Patron, in recognition of his contributions to community development and support for the Nigerian Police Force.
The honour was bestowed on Agboworin during the celebration of the 43rd anniversary of the PCRC, held at the Oyo State Police Command, Eleyele, Ibadan, on Thursday.
As part of his support for the organisation, Agboworin also announced a ₦5 million donation as a support fund for the PCRC, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening police-community relations and supporting initiatives aimed at promoting security and peaceful coexistence.
The event also featured the launch of the Safe School Project by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga PSc, Mnips, an initiative designed to promote safety and security within schools across the state.
Speaking at the occasion, the National Chairman of the PCRC, Mogaji Ibrahim Olaniran, showered encomiums on Agboworin, describing him as the best House of Representatives member he knows.
The PCRC National Chairman also commended the lawmaker for his commitment to his constituents, noting that Agboworin had remained actively connected to his people despite his responsibilities at the National Assembly.
He added, “We appreciate him for his love for the Nigerian Police. He is not one of the representatives that sleeps in Abuja. I am happy that he is my own representative. May God elevate him beyond the level he currently occupies.”
Following the commendation, Agboworin was presented with an award and formally installed as the Grand Patron of the PCRC, Oyo State.
In his response, Agboworin expressed appreciation to the PCRC for the recognition, describing the honour as a call to do more in supporting initiatives that promote peace, security and stronger relationships between the police and the communities they serve.
He also pledged his continued support for the committee and backed his commitment with the ₦5 million support fund to assist the PCRC in carrying out its activities.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, launched the Safe School Project and called on members of the public and other stakeholders to support the initiative.
The Commissioner emphasised the importance of protecting schools, stressing that the safety of children and educational institutions was directly connected to the security of the wider society.
According to him, “When our schools are safe, our society is also safe.”
He urged individuals, organisations, community leaders and other stakeholders to collaborate with the police and PCRC to ensure that schools across Oyo State remain safe and conducive environments for learning.
The 43rd anniversary celebration brought together senior police officers, PCRC officials, community leaders, government representatives and other stakeholders, with speakers commending the Oyo State Police Command for its efforts towards improving security and strengthening police-community partnerships.
