Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has issued a stern warning to those attempting to destabilize the traditional institution in the state, vowing to prosecute whoever is found culpable.

Speaking during the presentation of the instruments of office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, on Monday at the executive chamber of the governor’s office, Makinde stressed the importance of maintaining transparency and respect for traditional processes.

Governor Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the integrity of traditional stools, describing the Alaafin’s position as a sacred one that should not be influenced by politics or personal interests.

The governor issued a clear threat to individuals who have allegedly disrupted the process or exploited the system for personal gain saying: “Let me also say briefly that those that are still hell-bent on destabilizing the traditional institution in Oyo, the government is not letting down.

“We will prosecute them. The money they collected; they will still be prosecuted except they go to Kabiyesi. If he forgives them, I will also forgive them.”

Governor Makinde revealed that he deliberately refrained from interfering in the selection of the new Alaafin while emphasizing his belief in open and fair process.

“I met Prince Owoade for the first time in my life yesterday. I never spoke to him in my entire life until yesterday. I did not want my opinion to influence the process.” Makinde said.

Makinde also explained his administration’s nonpartisan approach, citing past decisions on traditional appointments where political affiliations were not considered.

While presenting the instruments of office, Governor Makinde congratulated Oba Owoade, praying for peace and progress during his reign:

In his words, Makinde said: “I pray that your reign shall bring unity to the Yoruba race wherever they may be around the world. I also pray it would bring progress and development to Oyoland, Oyo State, and the Yoruba race in general.”

The new monarch, in his response, pledged to work for the development of Oyo Town, Oyo State, and Nigeria.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo, commended the governor for ensuring transparency throughout the selection process.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials, members of the Oyomesi, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries.
