Performing the lesser hajj in Saudi Arabia was a profoundly spiritual and pleasurable experience. Just like it has always been in my previous trips, a lot has not changed. The sacred rituals, the camaraderie of fellow pilgrims, and the majestic architecture all combined to create an unforgettable journey.
When I was finding my way around the fascinating streets of Mecca and Medina, I felt a deep sense of connection to the divine and to the millions of Muslims who have made this sacred journey throughout history. It’s such a fulfilling experience I must say.
As an Imam and spiritual leader, I have always believed in the significance and power of prayer and supplication. During my time in Saudi Arabia, I offered heartfelt prayers for our great country, Nigeria, and more specifically, for Oyo state. Of course, for myself, too. I prayed for guidance, wisdom, and prosperity, knowing that the blessings of the Almighty are boundless and unconditional. I felt a sense of hope and renewal in those moments of quiet contemplation, knowing that our collective future is bright and holds prosperous ends.
One aspect of Saudi Arabian society that struck me repeatedly during my trip was the improvement that has happened in the level of order and discipline that pervades every aspect of life, – from the immaculately maintained public spaces to the seamless flow of traffic, it was clear that this was a society that valued organisation, respect for authority, and civic responsibility. I was constantly amazed by the depth of this orderliness, which seemed to permeate every level of the Saudi Arabian society, anywhere, any corner you turn to. Citizens obeyed laws, composed themselves with dignity, and abided by simple hygiene rules, which create a beautiful scene and message of social cohesion.
Actually, I’ve been pondering the vast differences in public order between Europe, the UK, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. While the Western nations have consistently demonstrated high standards of public order, Saudi Arabia, although not at par, is making commendable strides to bridge the gap, and I could tell and feel it, compared to my last trips, – the Saudi government and citizens have shown remarkable commitment to improvement, with significant changes evident year after year.
I see this dedication as truly inspiring, and it begs the question: why can’t we Nigerians emulate this level of seriousness and commitment to our own affairs? Why can’t we achieve this same level of order and discipline in Nigeria and Oyo state? Is it not realistic to expect our citizens to obey simple traffic rules, respect public hygiene, and abide by the laws of the land? I firmly believe that we can – and must – strive for this level of civic responsibility.
I also believe so firmly that we have the potential to do so, and it’s time for us to take a cue from Saudi Arabia’s progress and work towards creating a better, more orderly society for ourselves.
We just need to provide the motivation. It requires leadership with the courage to make tough decisions, the willingness to invest in our people, and the commitment to uphold the rule of law. As someone who aspires to leadership, I am convinced that this is the kind of vision, passion, and dedication that our people deserve.
My trip to Saudi Arabia was a spiritual rejuvenation that has left me feeling more inspired and motivated than ever. I have returned home, Oyo state, and I am eager to share my experiences and insights with others, to inspire a new wave of civic engagement and social responsibility. I firmly believe that our state can be better – better coordinated, better structured, and better managed – if we are committed to working together towards a common vision. This is my conviction, and I will continue to champion it with every fiber of my being.
