Governor of Oyo State, Engr ‘Seyi Makinde has announced the cancellation of his 2024 birthday celebration in the wake of the tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children at a carnival in Ibadan.

The stampede occurred early Wednesday morning during a children’s event at Islamic High School, Basorun, plunging the state into mourning.

In a show of solidarity, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, led other South East PDP leaders on a condolence visit to the governor on Friday.

During the visit, Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a preventable tragedy that has left the state in anguish.

“The untimely loss of 35 innocent children is a painful reality we must come to terms with,” he said.

He added that as a mark of respect for the victims, he has chosen to forego his annual birthday celebration, which usually holds on December 25.

“This year, I will remain indoors on my birthday. There will be no celebration,” the governor stated.

Makinde also appreciated the South East PDP leaders for being the first to visit him physically to offer condolences.

“On behalf of the government and people of Oyo State, we thank you for your support during this difficult time,” he said.

Senator Wabara, speaking on behalf of the delegation, extended the sympathies of the South East to Makinde and the people of Oyo State.

In his words: “We share in your pain and pray that God grants the families of the victims and the state the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.

Accompanying Wabara were prominent PDP leaders, including former Ebonyi State Governor Dr. Sam Egwu, former PDP National Secretary Chief Ben Obi, PDP BoT member Josephine Anenih, PDP chieftain Chief Obasi Elebe, and Ebonyi State PDP Chairman Mr. Onyema Nwele.

The tragedy has however, casted a pall over the festive season in Oyo State, with many residents expressing grief and calling for measures to prevent future occurrences.
