The GSM Advocates has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for prioritizing sustainable development as a cornerstone for stronger governance in Oyo State.

In a statement released by the GSM Advocates, the organization noted that Governor Makinde’s commitment to sustainable development is evident in his administration’s policies and projects, which aim to drive economic growth, achieve social justice, exercise environmental stewardship, and strengthen governance.

GSM Advocates applauds Governor Makinde’s visionary leadership in recognizing the importance of sustainable development in building a prosperous and resilient Oyo State,” said the statement.

The GSM Advocates highlighted several initiatives implemented by the Makinde administration, including the Oyo State Renewable Energy Policy, Waste Management Program, Acquisition of Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, upgrading of Airport into International standard and eco-friendly infrastructure development, as examples of the Governor’s commitment to sustainable development.

The upgrade of Ibadan Airport to international standards is anticipated to be completed within an 18-month timeframe. Governor Seyi Makinde has also announced plans to establish a committee to oversee and guide the upgrade process. The airport’s renovation will enable it to accommodate international flights, featuring a newly constructed terminal and an expanded runway.

Notably, Governor Makinde has also assured the Muslim community in Oyo State and neighboring states that Hajj pilgrims will be airlifted from the airport to the Holy Land of Saudi Arabia before the end of his tenure. The state government has confirmed that it possesses the necessary resources to drive this project forward, ensuring its successful completion.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally announced the acquisition of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium from the Federal Government, with the intention of upgrading the facility. The governor has expressed his commitment to remodeling the stadium into a world-class venue, comparable to other recently upgraded stadiums in Nigeria.

Bearing in mind that the Federal Government has previously handed over similar stadiums to other state governments, including the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna and the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium in Enugu. This move demonstrates Governor Makinde’s dedication to upgrading sports facilities in Oyo State, as evident in the recent remodeling of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex.

Furthermore, Governor Makinde has consistently invested in sports development, recognizing the achievements of athletes and coaches with rewards and providing modern equipment for training purposes. This comprehensive approach to sports development underscores the governor’s commitment to creating a vibrant sporting culture in Oyo State.

GSM advocates acknowledged the effort of Governor Makinde for sustainable development as a key driver of stronger governance, and we are pleased to see Governor Makinde walking the talk.

By prioritizing sustainable development, Governor Makinde is setting a precedent for stronger governance in Oyo State, and GSM Advocates is proud to be a part of this journey,” concluded the statement.

The organization called on other stakeholders, the private sector, and individuals to support the Governor’s efforts and work together to build a sustainable future for Oyo State.
