The Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo has promised to push for a review of constituencies in Oyo State in line with the provision of the Constitution.

Hon. Ogundoyin made the promise while ruling on a motion brought to the House by member representing Irepo/Itesiwaju State Constituency, Hon. Waliu Salami and co-sponsored by other five lawmakers.

Oyo State Speaker who is also the Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures noted that the review is necessary to ensure that each local government area has a representative in the state assembly.

” The current constituency arrangement is no longer tenable, considering the substantial population growth in Oyo State. It’s unacceptable to have a member representing two local government areas in the House of Assembly, and this is also happening in many States of the federation. As Conference of Speakers Chairman, I pledge to mobilize state assemblies to demand a constituency review from INEC, ensuring each local government area has a dedicated representative and enhancing representation in the House.”

According to him, the Oyo State House of Assembly is ready to appeal to INEC to review the state constituencies in Oyo State from 32 to 42 constituencies.

” Oyo State has a very big landmass and our population has increased exponentially hence some joint local governments that have a lawmaker each representing them should be reviewed”

“The constituency review is long overdue at the moment especially in Oyo State. I am happy this motion is coming at the right time. This will ensure that each local government area has a representative in the state assembly, thereby increasing popular representation in the House. I am ready to work with other state Houses of Assembly to ensure that the review is done across the country.”
