A bill seeking the alteration of Ibadan Central local government area to reflect the proper name ‘Ibadan North-East Local Government Area’, has passed first reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, which was sponsored by the Lawmaker representing Ibadan North East/South East Federal constituency, Rep. Abass Adigun, popularly known as Agboworin, is now set for second reading.

According to the draft bill, it proposes to amend the Part 1 of the First Schedule to the 1999 Constitution in Paragraph 30, line 2, which reads ‘Ibadan Central Local Government Area’ instead of Ibadan North-East Local Government Area’, which is one of the 33 Local Government Areas in Oyo State.

Sponsoring the Bill during plenary session on Thursday, Agboworin, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs, lamented the anomaly, which has lingered since the enactment of the 1999 Constitution.

He maintained that no bold attempt has been taken to effect necessary correction by previous representatives from the Constituency or Senators representing the Oyo South Senatorial District under which the jurisdiction falls.

The lawmaker, therefore, took it upon himself to the see that this error is corrected, seeking the cooperation of his colleagues in the House to support the passage of the bill through a second reading.

Agboworin said: “There has been a mistake in the name since the enactment of the 1999 constitution as amended, it has lingered for many years.

“No past lawmaker has looked into the aspect of effecting the correction. But I am here today to do the needful by sponsoring a bill seeking for alteration for the benefit of our people and Oyo State in general.”
