Why We Didn’t Leave In Annoyance After Being Insulted By Former President, Obasanjo —Sabigana

…Says constitution be amended for the respect of culture and tradition.

The Sabigana of Igana land , Oba Saliu Azeez Oyemonla Agunloye has stated reasons why monarchs being humiliated by the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo
during the inauguration of a 34.85 km Oyo-Iseyin Road and the completed Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Iseyin Campus, which houses the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources
.

The former President, who was a guest of Governor Seyi Makinde, commanded traditional rulers to stand up and after they complied, he then ordered them to sit down.

He said the former president being an elder statesman is expected to have respect for culture and tradition adding that an elder statesman is expected to promote culture and traditions

“unfortunately he insulted us by instructing we monarchs to be on our feets while he and the governor are delivering speech of which we have honoured the vice president and the governor in the way it was supposed to be done , he is not in the position to tell us when to stand for the constituted authority.

“We know the next action to take after we were being humiliated by him but we decided not to leave in annoyance after being insulted because we know two wrongs can never make a right

“We decided not to leave because of our relationship with the state governor who has the love of his people at mind and aswell committed to the development of the state

While he also explained that the monarchs also made the decision to stay because of the believe that the state belongs to them

“While we monarchs were not also pained by the insult rained on the monarchs and the crown because we believed he didn’t disrespect us but the culture and traditions , the ancestors and the sons and daughters of Yoruba land while we decided to stay because we know this is our land and it will not make any sense if we left when something good is about to be commissioned there

Oba Oyemonla noted that it saddens that the former presidents as an elder statesman should have not uttered such statements which according to him is not expected to be uttered by a little child adding that it also saddens that the former president refused to apologise after the incident.

He said though the Oyo state governor is yet to address the oyo monarchs after the ugly incident because he is out of the he is out of the country after the incident but it is believed that the state governor will address the monarchs after he returned from his trip .

“With these I think there should be an amendment of the constitution as regards respect for culture and traditions .

While the Oyo Monarch further stated that any tribe that lacks respect for culture and traditions will have no future .

Sabigana however implore the legislative arm of government to come up with a constitution in protection and promotion of the culture and traditions of each tribes in the country .

He said “ it also saddened that the British who colonised and brought their culture to this country has respect for their culture , and dare not disrespect the Queen of the land .

He however appreciate sons and daughters of Yoruba land for their support after the incident while he urge all sons and daughters of yoruba to promote culture and traditions of the tribe in a bid to prevent such ugly incidents in the future.
