Ogbomoso Politics: Are Defections to APC about the People or Personal Political Interests?

The growing wave of political defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) across Ogbomoso has reopened an important debate about political loyalty, ideological consistency and the true interests driving political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While defections are not unusual in Nigeria’s political landscape, the frequency and circumstances surrounding recent movements in Ogbomoso raise a fundamental question: Are these political decisions motivated by genuine ideological convictions and the desire to serve the people, or are they largely driven by personal interests and financial considerations?

This is a question that deserves serious public attention.

In a democratic society, politicians have the constitutional freedom to associate with any political party of their choice. However, such freedom does not exempt them from public scrutiny, particularly when their political decisions appear to contradict previously expressed convictions, alliances and commitments.

Political defections should not automatically be celebrated as evidence of growing grassroots support. The movement of prominent political figures from one party to another does not necessarily translate into the movement of their followers or the endorsement of such decisions by ordinary citizens.

There is a clear distinction between politicians changing political platforms and the electorate changing its political preferences.

Unfortunately, Nigerian politics has increasingly witnessed situations where political loyalty appears to be negotiated around access to power, financial benefits and personal opportunities rather than ideology, performance and public interest.

But how sustainable is a political structure built primarily on financial inducements?

Can political loyalty purchased through financial incentives withstand the pressure of genuine democratic competition? And should ordinary citizens be expected to follow political leaders simply because those leaders have changed their political affiliations?

The people of Ogbomoso deserve better than politics driven by individual calculations. They deserve political actors who can demonstrate consistency, accountability, integrity and a genuine commitment to development.

More importantly, the electorate must not be reduced to an appendage of political godfathers or treated as a group whose political decisions can be predetermined by the financial interests of a few influential individuals.

The people are not political properties.

It is equally important to emphasise that political strength should not be measured merely by the number of politicians defecting to a particular party. The real strength of any political movement lies in its acceptance among the grassroots, the credibility of its leadership, its record of service and its ability to address the everyday concerns of the people.

Against this backdrop, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) remains part of the political conversation in Oyo State. Its relevance, like that of every other political platform, should ultimately be determined by its ideas, leadership, public acceptance and capacity to offer credible alternatives.

As the political atmosphere gradually builds towards 2027, Ogbomoso citizens must look beyond political announcements, public endorsements and high-profile defections. They must critically examine the records, motivations and commitments of those seeking their political support.

Politicians may have their reasons for changing parties, but the electorate also has the right to independently assess those decisions and determine where its interests are best protected.

Ultimately, democracy is not about politicians deciding for the people; it is about the people deciding who deserves their mandate.

You may win the loyalty of a few politicians with money, influence or political appointments, but you cannot automatically purchase the conscience of the electorate. The people must be allowed to make their own decisions. The masses are wiser than many politicians think.

As Ogbomoso approaches another defining political season, one thing must remain clear: political loyalty may change, political alliances may shift, and parties may gain or lose prominent figures, but the ultimate power to determine electoral outcomes belongs to the people.
