Two elderly men narrowly escaped death after being rescued alive from a gas-filled well in the Jegede area of Ibadan, following a swift response by the Oyo State Fire Services Agency.

The incident occurred at No. 50 Asigi, Elebolo Zone 1, where the victims aged 62 and 76 were reportedly trapped inside a well contaminated with hazardous fumes.

Heritage Echo gathered through the officials of the agency that the distress call was received via telephone, alerting emergency responders to the situation involving individuals who had fallen into a well.

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters discovered that the victims had been overwhelmed by ammonia gas while digging the well, leaving them incapacitated and unable to climb out.

Emergency personnel immediately initiated a coordinated rescue operation, deploying professional techniques and safety equipment to secure the victims.

The responders carefully lowered safety ropes into the well and successfully brought both men to the surface without further complications.

The victims were rescued alive and subsequently handed over to their families for necessary care and attention.

Speaking on the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Service Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in all activities.

He cautioned residents against engaging in hazardous tasks without proper precautions, noting that exposure to toxic substances such as ammonia gas can be fatal.

Akinwande further stressed that “life has no duplicate,” urging the public to always adhere to safety guidelines and seek professional assistance when handling high-risk operations.

The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state, while encouraging residents to promptly report emergencies for immediate intervention.
