“Technical education empowers individuals to build a better tomorrow. It’s crucial for economic growth and a brighter future.” – Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education and Chair of ECW’s High-Level Steering Group

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is taking a giant leap towards revolutionizing education in the state. He has given the green light to remodel and revamp two technical colleges in Ibadan and Saki, aligning with the World Bank’s Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) model.

This bold move will empower students with top-notch technical and vocational skills, equipping them to thrive in today’s fast-paced workforce.

Under Governor Makinde’s leadership, Oyo State has witnessed significant strides in education. His administration has completed over several projects in the education sector, including the construction of model schools, classrooms, and office blocks, as well as the renovation of over 100 classrooms. These efforts have improved the learning environment for thousands of students.

Recall that the World Bank’s TVET model focuses on practical skills acquisition, enabling students to become entrepreneurs and innovators. By adopting this model, the revamped technical colleges will provide students with hands-on experience, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Governor Makinde is aware that equipping students with market-relevant skills will increase their chances of securing employment or starting their own businesses, it will also encourage entrepreneurship and creativity that will drive economic growth and development in Oyo State.

In his document available to the public, “Roadmap for Sustainable Development in Oyo State” Governor Makinde noted that vocational education will enhance the overall standard of education, making Oyo State a hub for technical and vocational excellence. The remodeling of these technical colleges is part of Governor Makinde’s broader vision to transform Oyo State’s education sector.

Governor Makinde’s commitment to education is evident in his administration’s allocation of over 20% of the state’s budget to the education sector, surpassing the UNESCO recommended standard . With the remodeling of these technical colleges, Oyo State is poised to become a leader in technical vocational education, empowering the next generation of leaders and change-makers.
