The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully averted a potential disaster following the overturning of a petrol-laden tanker in the Apake area of Ogbomoso.
The incident involved a Howo trailer tanker with registration number KMC 7872 ZU from Kano State, conveying approximately 66,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The vehicle reportedly lost control and overturned by the roadside, resulting in a significant fuel spill that posed a serious threat to lives and property within the vicinity.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform/Agency Chairman, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande confirmed the incident in a statement released and made available to our correspondence.
According to him, firefighters led by Chief Fire Superintendent Dairo swiftly responded to the emergency after receiving a distress call from a concerned passerby and an official of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Mr. Adigun Tayo.
“Upon arrival, the firefighting team immediately secured the scene and carried out necessary safety measures to prevent the outbreak of fire or explosion. Their prompt intervention ensured that the situation was brought under control without casualties”
Residents applauded the State fire in Ogbomoso axis as well as the State Governor for providing state-of-the-art equipment to the station in responding to emergencies.
Akinwande however, urged motorists and vehicle owners to cultivate the habit of regular vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable road accidents.
He also encouraged members of the public to promptly report fire and rescue emergencies to the agency through its emergency lines for quick response.
