The Forum of Oyo State Local Government Chairmen has applauded Governor Seyi Makinde for the inauguration of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, describing the development as a historic and strategic intervention that strengthens traditional institutions and promotes inclusive governance across the state.

The council, which was reconvened after a 14-year hiatus, was hailed by the chairmen as a critical platform for reinforcing peace, unity and harmony among communities in Oyo State.

In a statement issued on Thursday and jointly signed by the Forum Chairman, Hon. Sikiru Sanda, and the Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo, the local government chairmen congratulated traditional rulers across the state on the formal restoration of the council, noting that its revival would deepen collaboration between government and traditional authorities.

According to the forum, the Council of Obas and Chiefs plays a vital advisory role to government, particularly in strengthening grassroots mobilisation, enhancing information dissemination, supporting security and intelligence gathering, and providing effective mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution at the community level.

Governor Makinde officially inaugurated the council at the House of Chiefs, Oyo State Secretariat, Ibadan, where the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, was installed as the Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The forum noted that, in line with the rotational arrangement, the Olubadan will preside over the council for the next two years before the chairmanship is rotated among other first-class monarchs in the state.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the House of Chiefs within the Oyo State House of Assembly Complex, Agodi, Ibadan, attracted over 40 traditional rulers from across the state.

Reaffirming their commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage and grassroots stability, the local government chairmen pledged their full support for Governor Makinde’s initiative.

They also assured the Council of Obas and Chiefs of their cooperation in advancing peace, security and sustainable development across all local government areas of Oyo State.
