Properties Worth Millions of Naira Destroyed as Fire Ravages Shops, Residential Building in Ibadan

Properties Worth Millions of naira have been destroyed by a fire that ravaged lock-up shops purposely used to store expensive materials like carbides, private residential buildings in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Heritage Echo gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday, January 11th, 2026, at Eleha House, Nemo Area, Apata, Ibadan.
Laboowo, Ogunpa Market, Ibadan

The fire incident was a result of a spontaneous reaction of some of the stored chemicals absorbing heat and igniting the nearby combustibles and the set of buildings ablaze.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform/Agency Chairman, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande confirmed the incident.

Akinwande in his statement stated that; “the agency officer led by ACFA Ademola (Mrs). swiftly mobilized and deployed to the scene of the incident.

“Upon arrival, five (5) out of multiple lock-up shops purposely used to store expensive materials like carbides at the ground floor of a storey building used as a warehouse covered by flames and thick smoke.

“Our officers quickly swung into action and launched a coordinated attack to subdue and restrict the fire from spreading to the upper floor and nearby shops.

“The fires were jointly extinguished with the federal fire service and the Sweetco Fire Service, Ibadan.

Also, the Oyo State fire service agency attended private residential buildings on fire in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident occurred on Monday 12th January, 2026, at NCRI MOORE Plantation College, Ibadan.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform/Agency Chairman, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande confirmed the incident in a statement released and made available to Heritage Echo News.

Akinwande said, “Immediately the address was taken, a crew of firemen led by ACFS Amoo promptly deployed to the scene of the fire incident.

“Upon arrival, it was four (4) out of a row of six (6) self-contained private residential buildings engulfed by fire. The firemen swiftly got into action and prevented the fire from spreading to unaffected parts of the building and all nearby properties.

“No casualty was recorded. Properties worth millions of naira were saved by the fire service. The unfortunate incident was a result of an explosion from a domestic gas cylinder left unattended to ignited nearby combustible materials and setting the building on fire.

Equally, Hon. Akinwande stated that the Fire incident is a lesson for all to be extra cautious with the use of domestic gas and other flammable materials, particularly during this dry season to avoid unnecessary fire outbreaks.

While commending the fire service’s quick response to every emergency across the state, the chairman advises the general public to spread the hands of love and support to fire officers to jointly make our community safer.

He also urges the public to be conscious of fire and reiterates the importance of installing fire extinguishers in every household in order to prevent fire incidents when they first start.
