Frontline politician, lawyer, and 2027 Oyo State governorship hopeful under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barr. Akeem Adedeji Agbaje, has called on the Nigerian media to continue to play its constitutional role as the conscience of the nation and a vital bridge between the government and the governed.
He made the call while delivering the keynote address at the 2025 Oyo State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week, themed “Governance, Democracy, Politicians, and Society – Bridging the Gap Between Expectation and Delivery.”
The event, which held in Ibadan, attracted journalists, academics, politicians, and civic leaders across the state. Barr. Agbaje was accompanied by prominent political figures, including Hon. Egunjobi Samuel Modepoola (former member of the Oyo State House of Assembly and APC Deputy Governorship candidate in 2019), Hon. Johnson Samuel Gbadegeshin (former Secretary to Ibadan North West LG and State Chairman of the Adehun Movement), Hon. Ogundiwin Jonathan (former LG Chairman, Ibadan North East LG), Hon. Adeleke James (former LG Chairman, Oluyole LG), Hon. Ademola Lawal (former Secretary to Ibadan South West LG), Chief Oladejo Adebisi (former SSA to Governor Abiola Ajimobi), Hon. Dauda Kolawole (former SA to late Governor Ajimobi), Alh. Lateef Opeyemi (Special NEC member of NURTW, Abuja), Alh. Jalil Azukuna (former Ibadan North West APC LG Party Chairman), Hon. Olorundare Kayode (former Health Board Member), Hon. Mrs. Funke Olanrewaju, J.P. (former OYOWMA Board Member), Hon. Mrs. Ogunbodede Abiodun (former OYOWMA Board Member), and Alh. Tajudeen Azeez Olorunkun (former Crown FC, Ogbomoso Board Member).
In his address, Barr. Agbaje commended journalists in Oyo State and across Nigeria for their steadfastness, courage, and commitment to truth, describing the media as “the mirror of democracy and the moral compass of society.” He noted that no democracy can thrive without a free, responsible, and patriotic press.
“Democracy is about the people, their will, welfare, and wellbeing. But when governance fails to deliver on promises, the media must speak truth to power,” he said. “The pen remains one of the strongest instruments of change. Journalists must continue to enlighten, challenge, and build, not only report.”
Barr. Agbaje lamented the widening trust gap between government and citizens, saying it stems largely from weak institutions, corruption, and poor communication between leaders and the people. He, however, emphasized that the media occupies a strategic position in rebuilding public trust and strengthening democracy through fair, factual, and courageous reporting.
“The media must not become an echo chamber for political interests,” he said. “When the press compromises, democracy weakens. But when the media holds leaders accountable, citizens regain confidence in governance.”
He also called for a renewed partnership between the government, politicians, and the media to advance national development, stressing that journalists are not just watchdogs but nation-builders. According to him, bridging the gap between expectation and delivery requires transparency, inclusive governance, and a value-driven political culture where leaders view power as service.
“Our democracy will only grow when we strengthen institutions, demand accountability, and uphold integrity. The media must help drive this by shaping values, not just headlines.”
The APC chieftain also commended the Oyo NUJ leadership for its continued dedication to promoting ethical journalism and fostering dialogue on national development.
In closing, Barr. Agbaje urged journalists to remain fearless, responsible, and patriotic in the discharge of their duties. “To the members of the press gathered here, your work is sacred. Use it to illuminate the truth and inspire hope. May Almighty God bless the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Chapter, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria”
