Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a decades-long affiliation with the party he helped found.

In a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku announced his immediate departure from the opposition party. The letter was made public on Wednesday via a statement from his media adviser, Paul Ibe, on X (formerly Twitter).

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku wrote, citing growing disillusionment with the party’s trajectory.

He described the decision as “heartbreaking” but inevitable, pointing to what he called “irreconcilable differences” and a departure from the party’s founding ideals.

Atiku thanked the PDP for the platform it provided him to serve two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and to contest the presidency twice.

“I wish the party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support,” he concluded.

Atiku has previously left the PDP in 2006 and 2014—both times returning ahead of future presidential contests. His next political move remains unclear.

Details to follow.
