A potentially disastrous situation was averted on Saturday when the Oyo State Fire Service responded promptly to a truck and petrol tanker crash.

The incident, which occurred while in motion at the Gurumaraji area along the Lagos/ Ibadan Expressway, could have resulted in catastrophic consequences if not for the swift action of the fire service.
In another development, a petroleum tanker carrying 45 liters of petrol fell around Olunde junction in the Olomi area of Ibadan in a near-fatal accident.


It was gathered that the tanker with registration number GBS19XB, loaded with PMS, swerved off the road and rammed into a nearby gutter, spilling its contents.



The Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service reforms/Chairman Oyo State Fire Service Agency, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, confirmed the two incidents. He stated that the surface of the spillage was quickly doused with chemicals to avert a fire outbreak.
According to him, the incident which occurred on the same Saturday did not record any casualties.


Akinwande said; “The first incident was reported at exactly 12:04hrs through telephoning and Mr Abayomi to petrol trailer tanker accident at Olunde junction, Olomi Ibadan. Fire personnel led by ACFS Adedeji promptly deployed to the scene of the incident and on getting there, It was a HOWO trailer tanker regd. No.GBS19XB 45,000 liters capacity loaded with PMS swerved off the road and into the nearby gutter and content leaked.
“We quickly blind the surface of the spillage with chemical foam compound and prevent it from catching fire that might lead to an explosion. The incident was a result of a broken system failure.
However, another distressed fire call was received at exactly 14:38hrs. On arrival, we met an INVECO trailer truck loaded with tires that caught fire whilst on motion and well alight. Without delay, we swiftly swung into action,, and the fire was completely extinguished”.
No casualty was recorded, and the fire was, as a result, sparks from the engine compartment and set the vehicle on fire.

Equally, the Oyo State Fire Service Agency saves residential buildings from fire ravages. The incident, according to sources, occurred at 45 lanes 2b, Agodogbo phase 2 Fola Tyre in Oyo township on Saturday.
Heritage Echo correspondence gathered that a plasma (tv) plugged when not in use caught fire when Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) restored the power supply in the area.
Two rooms in the residential building were affected, while properties worth millions of naira were said to have been destroyed in the inferno.
While speaking with the newsmen, The Chairman of Fire Service reform, Hon. Moroof Akinwande, said that a fire incident was reported at exactly 19:15hrs on Saturday, 24th May 2025, through running caller and Mr Ademola Ogunlade to the house on fire at the above address.
The Agency’s Officers, led by ACFS Tijani Bamidele, promptly deployed to the scene of the incident. On getting to the scene of the incident, we met the living room of a two (2) bedroom flat engulfed by fire.
The fireman swiftly swung into action and the fire was curtailed and restricted from spreading to the other parts of the building.
However, the swift action prevented what could have been a major fire outbreak, potentially saving lives and property.
The Oyo State Fire Service has been commended for its professionalism and dedication to duty under the leadership of His Excellency, Engr ‘Seyi Makinde. The service’s ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations is a testament to its training and preparedness.
