The Director General of the 2024 Local Government Campaign Council in Atisbo/Saki East/Saki West, also known as Ifedapo Federal Constituency has lauded the Chronicles Of Nigerian’s democratic structure in commemoration of the past struggles in strengthen democratic values.
Hon. Ayobami Ojo further asserted that June 12 holds immense significance in Nigeria as it marks Democracy Day, a day that commemorates the struggles and sacrifices made to uphold democracy in the country.
His message read in parts;
“On this day, Nigeria celebrates the resounding victory of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola, in the presidential elections held on June 12, 1993”.
The 1993 elections were a turning point for Nigeria, as they were widely considered to be the most free and fair elections in the country’s history, with MKO Abiola receiving overwhelming support from Nigerians across different ethnic, religious, and regional backgrounds. It was a momentous occasion that would have seen the country embracing a new era of democratic governance.
However, the military government at the time, led by General Ibrahim Babangida, annulled the results and prevented the transition to democracy. This blatant disregard for the will of the Nigerian people led to nationwide protests and civil unrest, marking a period of struggle to restore democracy and respect for the voice of the citizens.
MKO Abiola, known for his business successes and his commitment to democratic ideals, became the symbol of Nigeria’s democratic aspirations. His arrest and subsequent imprisonment sparked outrage among the Nigerian people, who persisted in their demand for the rightful recognition of the June 12 election results.
After years of fighting for democracy, Nigeria finally achieved a significant milestone in 1999 when military rule was dissolved, and the country transitioned into a democratic government. However, it wasn’t until June 6, 2018, that the government officially recognized June 12 as Democracy Day, honoring the historical significance of the 1993 elections.
Celebrating Democracy Day on June 12 serves as a reminder of the power of the Nigerian people to unite and demand democracy, regardless of their diverse backgrounds. It recognizes the sacrifices of those who fought for the right to participate in free and fair elections and highlights the importance of upholding democratic principles in the governance of the nation.
The significance of celebrating Democracy Day on June 12 cannot be underestimated. It is a day that symbolizes the collective hopes, dreams, and aspirations of the Nigerian people for a government that represents their voices, serves their interests, and upholds the principles of democracy.
As we make it to the day Democracy was truly begeted in the Book of Record, I appeal to every Nigerian to strive more to embellish the beauty of our dear country.
Happy Democracy Day!
